Sandia Grotto

We are a caving club that is dedicated to the exploration, conservation, and protection of caves. (Past Programs HERE)

We continue to meet the first Tuesday of every month, 7:00 pm, at the location mentioned below. We start with introductions and the programs usually start around 7:15 pm. New members and visitors are always welcome. More detailed trip reports follow the program. We finish up with a business meeting before adjourning by 9:00 PM.

Due to Covid-19 concerns, we follow the Covid-19 rules in effect at the time of the meeting. Currently the Grotto is meeting in-person at the Quelab facility. If you are on our mailing list, you should be getting email notices providing details on joining the virtual meeting when available. Others wishing to join our 7:00 pm meeting can contact our Chairman for more information on how to join our meeting.

Note: The Quelab in Albuquerque is at 680 Haines Ave NW.

February 6, 2024:

Pete Lindsley will present a program summarizing a January meeting with the US Forest Service and the current status of the trail to the cave with examples of the currently proposed format for Public Outreach.

The Sandia Grotto usually has an interesting program with a "Cave" flavor each month. When we know in advance the nature of the program we will post it here on our home page so that you can make plans to attend. For a chance to chat with the speaker and other Sandia Grotto members, join us for an occasional dinner prior to the meeting. Come join us at 7:00 pm at the meeting to visit the cavers and tell us your interests. After introductions, we usually start the program promptly at 7:15 pm before our regular business meeting. Everyone is welcome to stay and join us in that discussion and additional trip planning. Past programs are HERE.

Check out our Sandia Grotto Brochure below. A few of our members will have spare copies for you.

Essentially located in our back yard... There is a trail to the cave that visitors follow up the hill to a circular staircase leading into the cave. Information on the results of a previous major restoration project is available HERE. We make occasional trips to this site to police the area for trash and any new graffiti.

This book, published by the Fort Stanton Cave Study Project , won a Certificate of Merit at the NSS Convention in 2017. Many of the Sandia Grotto cavers participate in FSCSP trips, and monthly trip reports at the meeting provide current information on Fort Stanton Cave and several of the other caving areas currently being visited.
